vac dressing 1

Vacuum assisted closure (VAC) also known as Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is an adjunctive wound treatment that involves the application of a controlled level of subatmospheric pressure to a wound to promote healing [2-5].

vac dressing 2

V.A.C.® Therapy is a non-invasive system that helps promote wound healing by the controlled application of negative pressure to a wound using a therapy unit to intermittently or continuously convey negative pressure [6]. This system draws out fluid from the wound bed and surrounding tissue allowing arterioles to dilate stimulating local blood flow [7]. Local circulation is promoted assisting in the proliferation of granulation tissues [1-5]. Bacterial burden is also decreased by the removal of fluid promoting wound healing.

VAC therapy should be initiated appropriately following comprehensive wound and patient’s assessment by the multidisciplinary team. Identifying and controlling factors that have caused and impaired the process of wound healing should be addressed along with VAC dressing application to promote wound healing.
